EOS-05 gives India its first imaging satellite designed to observe Earth from geosynchronous orbit.
Most Earth-imaging satellites in low orbit see a location only as they pass overhead. EOS-05 was built for a different kind of view: imaging from geosynchronous orbit, roughly 36,000 kilometres above Earth.
At that altitude, a satellite moves in step with Earth's rotation. Instead of brief passes over a region, it can repeatedly observe the same broad area—creating the possibility of persistent, high-level monitoring.
ISRO launched EOS-05 aboard GSLV-F17 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on 4 September 2026. The launch vehicle successfully placed the spacecraft into its intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, after which a sequence of orbit-raising manoeuvres began.
ISRO describes EOS-05 as a state-of-the-art Earth-observation spacecraft and India's first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit. The mission also marked the nineteenth flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.
Continuous observation can strengthen how a country watches changing weather systems, natural disasters, infrastructure and other time-sensitive developments. The significance is not simply sharper pictures; it is the ability to maintain a more constant view.
EOS-05 is a reminder that some of India's most consequential builds are not held in a hand or driven on a road. They operate quietly above the planet, expanding what the country can see and understand.
